As a design student sitting in your first day of art class waiting to discover all the mysteries of the art universe, with all its complexity and diversity you don’t expect your professor to start your design journey with something as simple as a line. A line is the most basic but yet most complex element in the world of art and design, you can push it and pull it, turn it and twist it, cut it and bend it and it will still cease to surprise you.

In 2020 the line element has entered the world of design with a loud boom! Line art.

Minimalism is the trend of the modern era and design trends in 2020 are all about getting minimal, Line art is a perfect example of less is more. Don’t underestimate the power of line art and the impact it has on its audience, you can show off your creativity and your skills as a designer by showing how you can make something as common as a line into something personal, unique, and new.

2. PATTERNS AND TEXTURES

Patterns and textures are all around us. They give taste to our designs. They have a sense of movement, rhythm, and playfulness, that’s why they have always been so loved throughout history and used abundantly. In the 21st century, however, when minimalism started growing as a trend all patterns and excessive lines, dots, colors, and shapes were ripped out of designs and were replaced by the most simple forms and elements. Luckily for us glam lovers, patterns, and textures are coming back and they are backed up by Big designers and artists in 2020, enter Yayoi Kusama. Yayoi Kusama is one of the most influential artists of the 21st century and her work? dots dots dots and more dots. People are loving patterns and textures like never before just as long as it is used uniquely by the designer and doesn’t feel old and outdated. Patterns and textures, when used right, can give a big sense of modernism and edge to your work as well as playfulness and creativity. What else could a designer want?

3. IMAGE AND TEXT MASKING

Words and pictures, the 2 things we see most throughout the day, whether we’re scrolling through Instagram, reading a magazine, watching tv, or just passing by a poster on the street. Words and pictures are part of our everyday life, so what do designers do? well, they grab a spoon and mix them up and make them into one big fun and creative style! Image and text masking. That’s why people like it so much, we are so used to seeing plain words all the time that we get excited and surprised when we see them being put together. It’s just what 2020 needed! an edgy style to give us a break from all the minimal aesthetic we’ve been talking about, it’s different but still modern and classy, but most importantly its liked by a lot of people! that’s why Image and text masking has become one of the top trends of 2020.

4. MONOCHROME

All these colors, why choose one?

Monochrome is another 2020 favorite design trend, but why is it adored so much? Using monochrome can give the designer the opportunity to emphasize on the concept of his or her work instead of distracting the viewer with many colors. A well made monochrome design will catch your eye, and keep your attention by showing you what’s important! Monochrome also has a vintage feel to it that younger people love and older people find nostalgic. It also emphasizes on the “less is more”, minimal concept that 2020 is all about. Basically monochrome is a style made up of a beautiful combination of concept and modernism.

5. BEVELS AND CHISELS

Bevels and chisels? did I read that right?

What does woodwork tools have to do with graphic design and 2020 trends?

The answer is, They create edge! literally. And sometimes a little edge is all that is needed to create a modern-looking design. In 2020 more designers are turning towards Bevels and chisels styles to give a different look to their shapes and a new approach to shading. Making their work stand out by giving a new 3D look with a warm “real life” feeling. The bevels and chisels style isn’t for everyone, but designers looking for a little edge could use this technique to give their design a little more spice.
